Programs & Services:
Sojourn House responds to refugee needs by providing supportive counselling, assistance in the re-settlement process and help in navigating the complex government process to acquire landed immigrant status and eventually Canadian citizenship. Specific programs that help these women, children and men stay in Canada and build secure, productive lives include:
- Settlement counselling
- Liaison work with government and non-governmental agencies
- Cultural orientation to Canada and Toronto
- Referrals to ethno-cultural groups and community centres
- Assistance in identifying transferable skills and identifying appropriate educational opportunities
- Follow up and outreach once a refugee has resettled into the community
The programs serve 100% of current residents, continue to serve many of the past residents, and reach out to refugees in the broader shelter community
Staffing:
Experienced staff and capable volunteers are on the premises at all times.
Languages Spoken:
Amharic, Arabic, English, Farsi, French, Spanish, Swahili, Russian,
Access to volunteer interpreters who speak other languages.
